Surgery with Velvet Gloves

Red dust covers
spades and picks
laying idle
near the bleeding lip
Of the man-made crater;
the aftermath
of a fired cannon ball.

The pit reveals:
a scabbard, a cracked helmet
and a marble head;
half buried in earth,
resisting the prying light
and moaning underbreath:
"Why have you bothered ? -
let our glorious past
lay buried beside us"

Circumspect consultants,
write in notepads;
tape measures extend,
measuring the length
and breadth
Of the excavation excitedly:
another rare find.

Velvet gloves are donned,
adjust the saw blade
so teeth bite and grip
into the marble frieze;

Sickening sounds of
severed limbs linger
all the way to the docks,
were empty
foreign cargo holds
await the booty of torsos.
