I haven't read all or even most of Dickens, but I have enjoyed enough to become a true fan. Am I the only one here who absoutely loved David Copperfield, and absolutely loathed A Tale of Two Cities?
And Oliver Twist is a good read, but I read it right after the first time I read DC, and it seemed quite a feeble attempt in comparison

I didn't loathe A Tale of Two Cities, but I wasn't hugely impressed by it, either. The narrative style in that work is so different from any of Dickens' other stories - and I like Dickens' usual style better. Also, AToTC is one of those stories where you already know what is going to happen just through popular culture because no one yells spoiler alert, lol.

I thought Tale of Two Cities probably took itself a little too seriously, since Dickens seemed like he was trying too hard to make a grand, epic social piece to span the ages. Still, by itself it's a great book, and I'm half in love with Sydney Carton.

DC is more personable and humorous, that's for sure. I think a nice balance between the two is Great Expectations, my all time favorite Dickens book. It has the humor and the irony of DC while tackling grittier social problems (not that there weren't any in DC). All three are great books in my mind.
