i wonder if anyone can help me with this ?
i have just finished reading copperfield for the first time and am mystified as to the roots or emergence of martha ...   she seems to appear from nowhere / david doesn't know who she is / the others in the sea community do but they don't tell him / she disappears with their help and when she re-appears we seem to be expected to know about her past.

there is almost enough information scattered through the later part of the book to put together an idea about her and her past and her raison d'etre but i wonder if i missed something either early on or in the later sections ( frankly i expected her to be like bounderby's mother (in hard times) or oliver twist's brother in that she would be fully explained after being 'the enigmatic one in the shadows'.

i'd be very grateful for any facts or opinions that may be around
