Yes, we're all familiar with the RSC's production of Nicholas Nickleby, but is there a play treatment of DC of the same caliber of NN? I teach in a university theatre department and think this could be an outstanding project to develop.

i did some research on this subject several months ago and came up with several dubious sounding musical adaptations, some school plays and very little else of quality outside of cinema and television.
it doesn't lend itself to conventional theatre and so, i would imagine, is frightening territory to the good (hence the lack of productions among them) and the bad and mediocre just do what they can with it ( i can picture the travesty now) ten thousand scene changes in noisy blackouts, too much directly lifted dialogue and an exhausted audience leaving the chruch hall at three in the morning
the rsc NN was cinematic in style and that approach would suit DC -
either that or something arty in the style of theatre de complicite
or... i think it would make a terrific opera rather than a musical or a play .... imagine the micawber's recurring duets: her ever more desperate, him gradually more depressed - or the trotwood household with a boy treble (later a tenor), mr dick (a countertenor) and betsy (a contralto) - possibly always with the same baisc structure thrown into minor key difficulties by the arrival of the murdstones or made more lush and romatic by the arrival of dora
i have been thinking about putting together a one man piece focusing on uriah heep - but it's in a queue behind other possible subjects (lord leighton's italian model, nijinski, bela lugosi and satie) ... so it may have to be about uriah's grandfather!
