Babylonian Sand

The west bank of the Tigris
Where the village once was -
and later the Capital
with the overhanging gardens
behind the three walled compound;
where throngs of lawyers,
and lobbyists walked past
bazaars, stalls of merchants,
artists and the performing poets

Can be brought back to life
with a Hologram - there among the
peppered banks of clay tablets:
that have lines of cuneiform script --
written by a civilized hand
that had decreed and signed off
codes of law (the rest
barely readable), crumble at the
fingertip pressure and collapse
into a puff of dust as if drained
into an hourglass cone;
a juncture in history heaped
into a pyramid of sand - all her
past glories broken and buried there.
