Ode to Semillon Botrytis
Pentheus: Do you perform the rites by night or day ? Dionysus: Mostly by night; there's mystery in the shadows.
Euripides- The Bacchae
Nasally assaulted at every turn
by tangs of tannins
plum, cherry, wild berry,
cinnamon and hints
of persimmon along
tessellated garden paths.
The bacchae asleep
somewhere in the verdigris vines;
Their copper-toned skin
have red weals by the silver fir
fennel stalk and ivy irritations.
A fresh fruit platter of pate,
walnuts and an amethyst salve
beside a goblet with a glorious
glow of yellow:
the Noble rot infection
that has taken hold of the vine
and imparted treacle teardrops
of apricots, waxed honey and almonds
onto the tongue sensationally,
just before the rites are to begin.
