Hop scotch

Toss the jacks,
A hop, step and a ...
Mother's yell interrupted
my thoughts and our game.
I looked up, my sister darted inside the house
The clouds came, and it poured,
washing away the hop-scotch markings
on the uneven asphalt.
It was the only time I ever led,
Now, no trace on the pavement
only chalk scribbles drawn by a child's hand
mingled with raindrops
and flowing down the gutter,
into storm-drains
that collect discarded
caramel-wrappers;
and it all gets washed out to sea,
with God knows what - some other
child's chocolate-foil wrapper
or pink chalk markings
that traced a dream run home.
