A Game At Dominoes

Bucks   - According to a letter of Lee-Anne Phillips to the David Copperfield Site, "Bucks (undoubtedly Buckinghamshire) is a typical (there are very many with similar architectural features) "Lych Gate" at the entrance to an English Gothic parish church. The Lych Gate is a covered entrance to the churchyard where the first part of the old burial service was performed. The roof kept off the rain when it was raining, offering shelter for the officiating priest and the pallbearers at least, and marked the demarcation between the secular world and hallowed ground. Some lych gates are quite elaborate, but the usual arrangement is simple. There's even a firm selling birdfeeder tables in this form, although I strongly suspect that they're not thinking too clearly about the derivation of the term, since the word "lych" means corpse. So few bother with etymology these days. Check also at the bottom of this article for a series of lych gate examples, one of which (from Buckinghamshire) features one of those perishing English Gothic parish churches in the background. There are several more from all over in the same list."
