Διὰ τί ἡ φιλία ἀπαραίτητή ἐστιν;

Why do we need friendship?

Looking at this question raises a lot of ideas. of course before we answer the question of why we, as humans, need friendship, we need to first look at the deeper question: 'what is friendship?'

This is very personal, and gives insight into how people perceive the world around them socially, and their relationships within this world. What makes to people 'friends?'

What does Greek philosophy say about friendship? What do people here think?

Yiannakis.

It is common in Greek culture (ancient and new) that God himself creates friendships, uniting the like with the like. In a real friendship (which is the only one that is going to last) you love God who creates friendship and Himself becomes the common property shared by friends. In the Mystery of Marriage the priest says that "no man shall divide those that God united". This godly union exists in every real friendship. We need friendship even to know ourselves, as Plato says, a soul, if she is to know herself, she must look into another soul.
