Hello all! I'm desperately looking for the source of the Plato quote that goes a little something like: "The first and greatest victory is to conquer self; to be conquered by self is, of all things, the most shameful and vile." If anyone is familiar with the source of this quote, or if someone is well-versed in ancient greek to give me a proper translation, I'd greatly appreciate your assistance!! Thanks.

Hi,

The quotation is from www.ellopos.net/elpenor/greek-texts/ancient-greece/plato/plato-laws.asp">Plato's Laws (626e). In the original: "τὸ νικᾶν αὐτὸν αὑτὸν πασῶν νικῶν πρώτη τε καὶ ἀρίστη͵ τὸ δὲ ἡττᾶσθαι αὐτὸν ὑφ΄ ἑαυτοῦ πάντων αἴσχιστόν τε ἅμα καὶ κάκιστον" (to conquer yourself is the first and best victory of all, while to be conquered by yourself is of all the most shameful as well as evil).
