Ernst Bloch
The harmony of the spheres

The universality of music was defended and scholastically classified. It now extended from the res transcendentales et divinae to cover the whole cathedral of the universe via stars, people, animals, plants and stones. And when the hierarchical world-picture reflected in the heavens had shattered, the harmonies of the spheres were still heard in art. There were still 'touches of sweet harmony', as Lorenzo described the stars to Jessica, still these sublime lines of recollection: 'Die Sonne t๖nt nach alter Weise / In Brudersphren Wettgesang'. And natural science, which deprived the world of these divine attributes, was itself still deeply embedded in Pythagorean doctrine to begin with. Even Kepler, one of the men who shattered the old image of the world, adhered to the music of the spheres, and went so far as to describe it in terms of the counterpoint of his age. With Kepler, the Lyra Apollinis vel Solis became the Baroque orchestra with all its polyphony. Read more...

Who is afraid of globalization?

The fear of Americanization of the planet is more ideological paranoia than reality

TO J. ATTALI, globalization seems like a global but unstable prevalence of the Western values - a temporary prevalence which is determined to lead in moral decay and the surrender of power to drug dealers and the Mafia! A globalised free market will destroy not only democracy, but even any sense of liberty and humanity! The end of free market, according to Attali, will not be communism but chaos. West will devour the whole world in a last, suicidal, dinner!  - Read more...

SAFRI DUO'S ENGLISH & FRENCH SUITES

Chandos - #9339

I've never understood why "there isn't anything better than a guitar, except for two guitars" -  but I see it proving true in the case of Safri Duo's percussion.

Safri play in a melodic way, exploiting a large dynamic area and expressive tempos and accentuations which make voices clear and compact. We wouldn't expect from percussionists to play  in a way that would make pianists feel jealous! However, replacing harpsichord or piano with percussion makes Bach's music sometimes to resemble the African poly-rythmic webs. Add to these the natural subtlety of the instruments and a good recording and you will have a great company!Add a note!

Create the David Copperfield Character DirectoryDickens is known for naming his characters in order to reveal something about the traits of the character. Betsey Trotwood's last name, suggests a hurried woman (trot), for she is fond of order and does everything with no time to spare. Remember her expression "Oh tut, tut, tut" [...] open to anyone's wishes and subject to all kinds of changes it [Copperfield's name] remains hidden - or maybe it doesn't exist at all, but only as a drive and cause of the very act of naming. This way David Copperfield indicates the hidden reality inside any other character in the story, who are thus defined from and in their relationship to him. Copperfield remembers

He [Mr. Micawber] solemnly conjured me, I remember, to take warning by his fate; and to observe that if a man had twenty pounds a-year for his income, and spent nineteen pounds nineteen shillings and sixpence, he would be happy, but that if he spent twenty pounds one he would be miserable. Windows Hardcore

Freeware downloads

/cd burning

IsoBuster can read badly recorded or damaged cds and recover your precious files - at least most of them! Where Windows just pops up a message like "incorrect funtion", etc before it crashes, IsoBuster extracts whatever can be read from the cd. Take care: it may stall on a single file for 10 or 20 minutes. If lot of cd sections are damaged, this means you will need a whole day to read the cd. What you should do? Open it. Select cd drive and the folder you want to save. In the first error select the "Ignore All" option and just leave it to finish the cd (I wouldn't advise you to do anything else with your computer while this progy works).

/system tools

Dialup Networking Backup Tool backs up your dial-up connections (not only user name and password but the whole working thing, "connectoids" (as accessed by opening the dialup networking folder in "My Computer"). It does this by creating an internet settings file that when opened recreates the DUN connection detailed in the file. If you install your system from the beginning or just happen to delete something, etc it will restore your connections in a click of your mouse! Just indispensable!

DirKey is a small utility that enables fast access to local and network folders by allowing the user to define folder bookmarks (keyboard shortcuts). These bookmarks can be defined on the fly whenever you are browsing your file system in Windows Explorer or Open/Save Dialog boxes. If you cut/copy and paste files frequently from and in certain folders, you will need it.

/text tools

The Font Thing is a freeware font management tool for Win9x/NT/2000. You can browse installed and uninstalled fonts, browse fonts in subfolders as a single combined list, view sample text and individual characters in your choice of colours, install or uninstall any number of fonts at once, load (and unload) any number of fonts for temporary use, copy or delete any number of font files at once, rename font files to avoid file name conflicts - and more. An excellent tool, by S C E Fisher.

Troubleshooter

I needed to change the default Office font in order to see Polytonic Greek characters in crucial occasions, like placing the mouse over a footnote. However, achieving this is not very easy, at least not if you use Win2K. If you want Office to use your default system font instead of Tahoma or Arial you should do a few registry modifications. Going to

and creating the dword "UseOfficeUIFont" with a value of "0" seems not to be enough. If this won't work, you should also open

and create two new strings, one with a name of "Tahoma" and value "yourfontwhatever", and another one with a name of "Arial" and a value of "yourfontwhatever". Delete Tahoma fonts from the Fonts directory. These changes will affect not only Office but the whole system. Some applications may not be able to use your font. It's a risky tip, but you can undo it easily.  Note those three new registry keys and delete them if you have any problems. Don't forget to reinstall Tahoma.
