John Marshall, A Short History of Ancient Greek Philosophy
(From Thales to the Stoics)

with notes and study links by Elpenor

The main purpose which I have had in view in writing this book has been to present an account of Greek philosophy which, within strict limits of brevity, shall be at once authentic and interesting— authentic, as being based on the original works themselves, and not on any secondary sources; interesting, as presenting to the ordinary English reader, in language freed as far as possible from technicality and abstruseness, the great thoughts of the greatest men of antiquity on questions of permanent significance and value. When a people commits spiritual suicide

All of these happen, when ‘Macedonians’ are Slavs and speak a Slavic type of language, for which they should be proud not ashamed! Slavs have already a long and creative history, what is the mad ‘reason’ of ‘Macedonians’ to despise this history, pretending what they are not, what they don’t even want to be!!!?… More

Someone Like Hodder

 Someone Like Hodder

The main achievement of the movie, indeed of the gracious combination of Genz with Johansen, is that we love Hodder and his reality becomes the only reality that matters. Even Chuck Norstadt stays always with McLeod, however we sympathise with their relationship, admire, will to have it ourselves, etc. David Copperfield even as a kid remains in his own adventure, he doesn’t get off the pages (or the movie), to live with us. Hodder walks off the screen and is really, exclusively and simultaneously with each and everyone who wants to be with him. Is a beautiful dream less real than an evil ‘reality’?, he asks. Is not reality at its home in whatever is beautiful? - More

Windows Hardcore Start Page

Windows Freeware has not been updated for a while;
here follows a special update, including anti-virus solutions

AutoHotkey is a free, open-source utility for Windows. With it, you can: Automate almost anything by sending keystrokes and mouse clicks. You can write a mouse or keyboard macro by hand or use the macro recorder. Create hotkeys for keyboard, joystick, and mouse. Virtually any key, button, or combination can become a hotkey. Here are some of the ways I use AutoHotKey: to click on a tray icon by just pressing a keyboard shortcut, to minimize all windows except for the active one, to have the date and hour displayed on windows desktop, to change the size and re-position certain application windows on the fly, to open programs without using Windows' Start Menu (by typing just a few letters of the programs' name), to have a shortcut-key controlled pop-up menu with favorite applications and folders, to have the mouse click automatically (without pressing the mouse button)...

Ever had such an annoying message given by Windows: Cannot delete file: Access is denied There has been a sharing violation. The source or destination file may be in use. The file is in use by another program or user. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use... Download Unlocker and avoid restarting your programs or even the whole Windows system.

The problem with clipboard extenders/managers is that they suddenly stop co-operating with the clipboard or even lead to system crash. This is not the case with CLCL, a freeware that works flawlessly storing simple or rich text and images. You can have permanent collections of stored clips, paste using shortcut keys, extend the program with plugins. However, it is not accidental, I guess, that the author preferred a distribution without plugins, some of which may cause problems. I think that the metafile capture plugin is problematic. In any case, my suggestion is to try each plugin, if you need it, and remove it if it causes problems. CLCL by itself works fine and fast.

Metamorphose is an open source program for mass renaming of files and folders; it combines great flexibility with an intuitive interface, allowing many different rename operations. Cross platform, it can be used on a variety of operating systems. It doesn't have problems with non-english characters, it is safe (it doesn't delete files from the disk), it has a covnenient preview option in real time (as the user enters the criteria of renaming). Maybe the best renaming utility...

If you download tones of audio files and want to delete a file the time is being played in WinAmp (you don't like a song and you want to delete it instantly), download WinAmp File Deleter. WinAmp moves to the next file in list, and the previous song is deleted (to Recycle Bin, if you prefer). There is also the option of not deleting but moving a file to a predefined folder. Unfortunately the Deleter plugin is controlled by two tray icons (one to delete and another one to move a file), not from the keyboard. However, you can use an AutoHotKey macro to automatically click these icons.

Searching for a soundtrack that does not exist, or just want a sound excerpt from a video file? AoA Audio Extractor provides you a handy tool to extract audio/sound or background music from video files. With AoA Audio Extractor, you can easily extract audio tracks from AVI, MPEG, MPG, FLV (Flash Video), DAT, WMV, MOV, MP4, 3GP video files and save them as MP3, WAV and AC3 formats. It can also be used to save any portion of the audio of a video file.

AVI ReComp allows you to recompress your AVI files. The application supports not only files containing audio streams but AVIs without any audio as well. AVI ReComp can be very useful for users who want to clear their AVIs out of GMC or Qpel functions to prepare their clips for standalone DVD players. The program contains the feature of embedding subtitles into video.

CUE Splitter is a freeware tool that splits a single big audio track, mostly an album or a compilation, into the relative individual audio tracks, using informations contained in the associated "CUE" file. Sometimes you can find a big compressed audio file (for example MP3, APE, FLAC, OGG, WAV, WMA, etc...) equipped with a small "CUE" text file that contain informations about tracks title, artist and length. Note: if you don't need the ape or flac excessive quality, first convert these formats to mp3 and after that split the mp3 file with CUE Splitter, because it works unbelievably slower with ape or flac formats, while mp3 files are divided instantly.

IZArc is a freeware archive utility supporting many archive formats like: 7-ZIP, A, ACE, ARC, ARJ, B64, BH, BIN, BZ2, BZA, C2D, CAB, CDI, CPIO, DEB, ENC, GCA, GZ, GZA, HA, IMG, ISO, JAR, LHA, LIB, LZH, MDF, MBF, MIM, NRG, PAK, PDI, PK3, RAR, RPM, TAR, TAZ, TBZ, TGZ, TZ, UUE, WAR, XXE, YZ1, Z, ZIP, ZOO. With a modern easy-to-use interface, IZArc provides support for most compressed and encoded files, as well as access to many powerful features and tools. It allows you to drag and drop files from and to Windows Explorer, create and extract archives directly in Windows Explorer, create multiple archives spanning disks, creating self-extracting archives, repair damaged zip archives, converting from one archive type to another, view and write comments and many more.

PhotoFiltre is a very fast, yet complete image retouching program. If you wait an hour for PhotoShop to open, just to resize a picture, or crop, or add some text, apply a common filter, etc, just use PhotoFiltre. It allows you to do simple or advanced adjustments to an image, apply a vast range of filters on it, and it opens in a moment.

Three image related freeware programs by FastStone: Image Viewer is an image browser, converter and editor that supports all major graphic formats including BMP, JPEG, JPEG 2000, GIF, PNG, PCX, TIFF, WMF, ICO and TGA. It has a nice array of features such as image viewing, management, comparison, red-eye removal, emailing, resizing, cropping, color adjustments, musical slideshow and much more. MaxView is a tiny, very fast and innovative image viewer that supports all major graphic formats. Its intuitive layout and commands allow everyone, from beginners to professionals, to view and manipulate images quickly and efficiently. You won't need to wait 5 hours for your PhotoShop or PaintShop to open, in order to view a picture or make some simple editing. Photo Resizer is an image converter / resizer intended to enable users, especially digital camera owners, to convert, rename, resize, crop, rotate, change color depth, add text and watermark to images in a quick and easy batch mode. It is fast, easy to use, allows saving of tasks that you repeat often.

Searching for a replacement to Adobe Acrobat Reader, I tried Foxit, PDF Active Reader, Sumatra and finally what I recommend, Tracker's PDF-XChange Viewer. Tracker's viewer opens slightly slower than Foxit, but pretty fast (not just faster than Acrobat) and works better.

Free Download Manager is a powerful, easy-to-use and absolutely free (GNU) download accelerator and manager. It downloads in parts (reliably) and resumes. It supports also bitorrent protocol, video downloads (youtube etc), full web sites, and it includes scheduler and traffic control.

IE7Pro is an add-on for Internet Explorer, which includes Tabbed Browsing Management, Spell Check, Inline Search, Super Drag Drop, Crash Recovery, Proxy Switcher, Mouse Gesture, Tab History Browser, Web Accelerator, User Agent Switcher, Webpage Capturer, AD Blocker, Flash Block, Greasemonkey like User Scripts platform, User Plug-ins and more.

IE with a few simple power-ups is even better. You can add functionality to IE5, 6, and 7 with Bayden IEToys, tiny tools that take up almost no disk space, and won't slow down or destabilize IE. They include quick Encyclopedia and Dictionary Lookup, and a quick cleanup ("delete images") that zaps non-text page elements, not only images, if animations and flash distract you.

Greek Literature - Ancient, Medieval, Modern

Word of Farewell

Certain professors of education must be wrong when they say that they can put a knowledge into the soul which was not there before, like sight into blind eyes. The power and capacity of learning exists in the soul already; just as the eye was unable to turn from darkness to light without the whole body, so too the instrument of knowledge can only by the movement of the whole soul be turned from the world of becoming into that of being, and learn by degrees to endure the sight of being, and of the brightest and best of being, or in other words, of the good.    - Plato
