M. Laistner:
Knowledge of Greek in Western Europe during the earlier Middle Ages

Eckhart Start PageWhilst warning against the assumption of his predecessors, Ludwig Traube argued that the Irish were virtually the only students of Greek, and that the occurrence of Graeca, Greek words or tags, in a manuscript pointed to Irish authorship or influence. ... If by "knowledge of Greek" is meant the ability correctly to understand a Greek author theological or secular, or the Greek Bible, then assuredly competent Hellenists of the eighth and ninth centuries can be counted on one hand. If, on the other hand, it merely implies acquaintance with the Greek alphabet, with a few passages from the Greek liturgy, or with a few isolated Greek words or phrases, generally from the Old and New Testament, then the sum of the accomplished will be somewhat greater, though still small in proportion to the total number of literate men. It has been a radical fault of many modern discussions of the subject that little or no distinction has been drawn between the first and the second class that we have indicated. [Read complete]

Papatsonis: Scheme

Re-written in German by Ayye^os

Imagined to be a half-goddess, sprung from the love between a human and a Greek deity, beautiful Lady Alicia is the personified protagonist of Truth in this version in German, which obeys to a hexametrical rhythm giving tribute to its original roots. - Was bricht so machtvoll hervor wie die Sonne, liebste Alicia ? / Gleichnishaft wirklich wie Liebe aus deinen strahlenden Augen ? / Rasend begehre ich es wie ein Blinder seine Erleuchtung ! Windows Hardcore

New version of Kalos Greek verbs conjugator available at www.conjugator.net  (thanks for letting us know Gonzalo and Mariana!). Note that Kalos' new version is written in java, making the life of Windows users difficult.

New version of Point-N-Click - 2.02.18 - is available for download from http://www.polital.com/pnc (thanks for letting us know Annemarie!). The configuration program option menu now includes options to turn off the "thunk" and "click" sounds when an AutoMouse function is selected or occurs. The colors used for highlighting (yellow) an AutoMouse button and for indicating an active (red) button are now user configurable. The Exclude Programs has been added to allow users to specify programs that Point-N-Click is not to work with.

The sound and exclude programs functions, is what we asked from Polital Enterprises a few months ago thinking that this will help some users, including us. Thank you for paying attention to our feedback. Point-N-Click is simply a program we can't live without!

[on the occasion of the second part of "The Lord of the Rings"]

The Hobbit Habit, By Robert M. Adams

The siege of Isengard is very like the siege of Gondor; again and again the heroes are called on to crawl through dark and perilous underground passages to which Agnew's wisdom applies -- when you've seen one tunnel, you've seen 'em all. And the hobbits take an inordinate number of forced marches cross-country, which exhaust not only the little creatures but the reader. Still, it is a world in which one can be caught up, with surprises and suspense to atone for the occasional longueurs, and a reassuring sense over all that Good is always good to its supporters and will certainly prevail.
