In the shadow of the vulture

THANK GOD there are at least some United Nations camps in this world, I was ready to write, when my friend Soeren, who was watching a movie, came in the study and saw that photo.
- "I was there, you know", he said. " I let him take the photo and when he left, I took the child in my arms and walked to the camp. Some time away, there was another child like the first one - crawling, unable, almost dead. I carried both of them. There was a third one and I carried it. There were also a fourth and a fifth and I carried them too, already crying and asking God to forgive me, because I wouldn't handle another child - if there was to appear another one in our way. I also prayed to Him to have mercy on people like Carter or the Pulitzer responsibles, who have the blessing to be God's bitter hand on this earth."

Dostoevsky, The Dream of a Ridiculous Man
... They formed into unions, but it was against one another.
Reproaches, upbraidings followed. They came to know shame, and shame brought
them to virtue. The conception of honour sprang up, and every union began waving
its flags. They began torturing animals, and the animals withdrew from them into
the forests and became hostile to them. They began to struggle for separation,
for isolation, for individuality, for mine and thine. They began to talk in
different languages. They became acquainted with sorrow and loved sorrow; they
thirsted for suffering, and said that truth could only be attained through
suffering. Then science appeared. As they became wicked they began talking of
brotherhood and humanitarianism, and understood those ideas. As they became
criminal, they invented justice and drew up whole legal codes in order to
observe it, and to ensure their being kept, set up a guillotine. They hardly
remembered what they had lost, in fact refused to believe that they had ever
been happy and innocent. They even laughed at the possibility of this happiness
in the past, and called it a dream...

Sacred texts from many religions, cultures or even quasi-cultures - more or less important. We wouldn't agree with the categorization in all the details, nor would we include some of this material, but it is maybe the best available collection of the kind, and a huge one! Warm congratulations to the responsibles!

MP3Gain
analyzes and adjusts mp3 files so that they all have the same loudness without
any quality loss. This way, you don't have to keep reaching for the volume
dial on your mp3 player every time it switches to a new song, or you can record
your cd anthology without editing separately each and every file. MP3Gain
operates in two modes. Radio mode allows a mix of unrelated songs to be
volume-corrected to a selected level.
MP3Gain calculates the volume level for each song individually.
It then corrects each song to make its volume level match the Target Volume.
With Album mode, you want some songs to be noticeably quieter than
other songs, just like they are on an album. If you're playing a classical CD,
you expect the track with the flute solo to be quieter than the track with the
big full-orchestra finale.
Album mode allows you to correct an entire album while keeping each song's
volume level relative to the other songs.
With dBpowerAMP
converter you can convert a whole plethora of audio files, from one format to another - whilst preserving ID Tag information (ID3v2 compatible). Wave and Mp3 formats straight after install, Codec Installs add many more audio types,
'Rip' (take) sound from Audio CDs digitally and store on your computer. Features:
* Explorer Integration - displays information about a track in explorer, also allows ID tag editing [Power Pack option],
* Sveta Portable Audio [add-on] is able to send audio straight to your portable Mp3 player,
* Auxiliary Input [add-on] can record your LPs, * File Selector [add-on] makes selection of whole folders of audio files a breeze.

Point-N-Click by
Polital Enterprises will click a mouse automatically at regular
intervals or in other ways. People who use the mouse excessively
will find it indispensable in relieving finger pain. You only have
to point: it will click. Fully customizable and convenient.
Congratulations! - Tip: unfortunately, pnc plays a sound each time
it clicks, which can be very annoying. I haven't found out how to
disable this, so I edited the sound and made it silent. If you don't
have a sound editor on your system, you can download
"start.wav" now. Unzip the file to the pnc folder to
replace the original start.wav

SpamWeasel is a simple program that will check all your E-mail as it is collected from your Internet Service Provider (ISP) against a set of rules to try to filter out Spam
E-mails. Once a mail has been identified as potential Spam, the software can be configured to perform user configurable actions. The actions taken can be linked to a certainty or priority associated with each rule. This allows an easily identified Spam mail to be treated differently than mail that may or may not be Spam.
AdShield is not yet another proxy server, not a mime filter and it does not update your Windows HOSTS file. There is nothing to configure, no dead space on your screen and what you see when viewing the HTML source in the browser is exactly what was downloaded in the first place. It integrates tightly with the browser to provide a drag and drop interface and the instant gratification of seeing ads disappear from the screen without so much as a push of the Refresh button. In addition to suppressing individual images AdShield can inhibit the downloading of entire pages and the popping up of new browser windows.

Of
all ridiculous things the most ridiculous seems to me, to be busy—to be a man
who is brisk about his food and his work. Therefore, whenever I see a fly
settling, in the decisive moment, on the nose of such a person of affairs; or if
he is spattered with mud from a carriage which drives past him in still greater
haste; or the drawbridge opens up before him; or a tile falls down and knocks
him dead, then I laugh heartily. And who, indeed, could help laughing? What, I
wonder, do these busy folks get done? Are they not to be classed with the woman
who in her confusion about the house being on fire carried out the firetongs?
What things of greater account, do you suppose, will they rescue from life's
great conflagration? - from Kierkegaard's, Diapsalmata
