I ran across Prof. Philemon Zachariou's YouTube explanation of these and was impressed at how well it explained away a lot of issues most classicists seem to have with Greek pronunciation. But I have no way of determining the accuracy of the piece. I welcome comment from any familiar with this, especially George's opinion (of course).

Thanks for bringing this video to our attention Aristokles. I think there is no serious objection today, that modern Greek pronunciation starts at least in the times of Plato, as I write in www.ellopos.net/elpenor/greek-language.asp" target="_blank">Elpenor's Greek lessons. As this video also makes clear, alternative views are not only uncertain, they lack the support of the living language, which is the Greek as spoken by Greeks today.
