Can anyone suggest some books on early church history and the history of the New Testament text?

If you can read modern Greek, buy the "Greek Patrology" by P. Christou. Search in English for relevant works by Fr. Florofsky. I'm sure other members will help you find non-Orthodox resources.

Cf. OnLine various texts (mainly sources, but also secondary material) at Elpenor's history pages : www.ellopos.net/elpenor/greek-texts/greek-resources-history.asp" target="_blank">https://www.ellopos.net/elpenor/greek-texts/greek-resources-history.asp

On this page see Phillip Schaff, a 19th Century Presbyterian

and there are many other early source materials on the same page.
