An Afternoon under the Parasol

From the blue-green hazed horizon
in a luminous globe of air
swimming in paddocks of heat haze
her features were indistinguishable
and like an aura
in pale-yellow and lucent silk
she walked with a tray of beer glasses
the strange twilight around her
seemed to matter more
than that other atmosphere
under the parasol:
a debate like a bushfire
back-burned for control
raged amongst the plainsmen

"and what is more real?:
the harsh light outside?
or the mild light
around the woman ?:
we think nature is more real
than things of our making"

the plainsmen voices echoed
along the dim alcoves
with windows facing south
onto deep-leaf shaded verandahs

men who would not venture anymore
beyond the comfort of their own plain
leather-tanned men
drinking now beer
the dew forming on drinking glasses
and sweat bands building up
on parched foreheads
after laying cairns of stones
by the hillsides
and some pocket-blade inscriptions
on unfamiliar specie of tree
saying they came and settled here
well short of blue-green hazed horizon
