     Song for a Swallow

It is spring, swallows are here:
we hope it is a good year
Our door is open: will you come in ?
there is a carafe of house wine;
mature cheese on a wooden table
and on a stove, a pot of lentels brim
Women scurry about and the wife sings
So what gifts did you bring ?
Come into our home and greet
us all by the roaring oven fire:
The young ask in their song:
if you are going to bring anything
make sure whatever it is, is big
Sweet swallow you are most welcomed
the young, the old and the wife
sing not for another ordinary year.

I was just searching for news about the Rhodian "Song of the Swallow" and I happened to find your text.. Is it a translation you made? In case, could you post the original text?
Hope you'll read it, thank you so much anyway..

hello evridiki,

The poem is not a translation; though I do admit, it makes use of the swallow metaphor as harbingers of new opportunities, luck etc -- it is my improvisation on a rhodian motif.

Thanks & cheers
Nicos

Very kind of you to answer so rapidly..!
I like your version: you managed to create quite a warm atmosphere and the rhodian model is visible enough to make the whole poem more charming, though it doesn't deprive it of originality. Good job!
Hope the swallow will bring me luck during the exam awaiting me.. Cheers,

Chiara

[sorry if my English's not what you call perfect]
